One of the key items on the agenda of the 19th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, taking place in Asunción, Paraguay from December 2 to 7, is the nomination of Sevdalinka for inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This important recognition is expected to be granted today. In anticipation of Sevdalinka’s inclusion, the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), the primary authority behind the nomination process, has shared the exciting news with the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, CE Report quotes FENA.

Sevdalinka is a traditional Bosnian-Herzegovinian folk song that holds a deep cultural significance. Known for its emotional intensity and poetic lyrics, Sevdalinka is often characterized by themes of love, longing, and loss. The genre's distinct sound combines elements of Turkish, Arabic, and Persian influences, reflecting the region's diverse cultural history. Often performed with a rich blend of vocals and instruments like the tamburica and accordion, Sevdalinka embodies the soul of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian people, evoking both personal and collective emotions through its melodies.

The recognition by UNESCO acknowledges Sevdalinka not just as a musical tradition, but as an important aspect of the cultural identity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This recognition is a testament to the efforts to preserve and promote this unique art form, ensuring its transmission to future generations.
