Serbia moves toward possible early elections

Politics

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that elections in Serbia will be held within the next three to four months, while the relevant authorities will decide whether parliamentary and presidential elections will be held simultaneously.

Vučić has previously mentioned possible dates for early parliamentary elections, but they have not yet been called, CE Report quotes STA.

When asked on TV Prva whether the presidential and parliamentary elections would be held together or separately and when they would take place, Vučić said he does not know and that the competent institutions will decide.

“I have said enough that we will go to elections soon, in the next three or four months, and that is it,” he added, according to the Serbian news agency Tanjug.

He also said that he is “not afraid of election night.” He emphasized that the will of the people is different from a year ago and that his political opponents now have fewer chances of winning, although, as he stated, it would not have been easy for them to win even a year ago.

Possible move to the prime minister post?

Early parliamentary elections have been demanded for months by students who are leading anti-government protests that began after the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, which killed 16 people.

The protesters initially demanded accountability for the accident, but the demonstrations later evolved into a broader expression of anger over systemic corruption and repression. Participants, including many students, have also called for early elections.

Vučić has repeatedly mentioned possible election dates, including late June or July, but has not called them yet, reportedly because opinion polls suggest he could lose.

Next year, Vučić will complete his second presidential term, and under the Serbian constitution, he cannot run for that office again. Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić has previously hinted at his possible candidacy for prime minister.
