Slovenia has gained two spots in the annual Global Peace Index by the Institute for Economics and Peace, making it to the top five for the first time since the report was first compiled twenty years ago.

Iceland remains at the top of the ranking for the 19th consecutive year, having further improved its score over last year, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.

New Zealand is in second place and Switzerland is in third. Slovenia follows in fourth place, and Ireland in fifth.

The index looks at several security aspects, with the most peaceful countries ranking at the top.

In terms of ongoing domestic and international conflicts, Slovenia is in the top 20, in societal safety and security it is in ninth place, and in militarisation it ranks sixth.

The situation has deteriorated in 99 countries out of the 163 included in the index, which is the largest number ever recorded.

The report finds that armed conflicts were the main driver of the decline last year. "There are now more active state-based conflicts than at any point since the end of the Second World War, while the number of countries involved in external conflict has nearly doubled since 2008."

Western and Central Europe remained the most peaceful region, while the Middle East and North Africa were the least peaceful, the report said.
