Louvre's Apollo Gallery to reopen after 2025 jewel heist

The Apollo Gallery at the Louvre Museum, the site of the spectacular jewelry heist in October 2025, will reopen to the public on Wednesday, but without display cases or any jewels on exhibit, a source close to the case confirmed on Monday, AFP reported.

The famous gallery at the Paris museum will "reopen on Wednesday," the source told AFP, confirming a report by Le Parisien, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

France's Ministry of Culture also confirmed to AFP that Culture Minister Catherine Pegard will attend the reopening.

In an interview with Le Parisien, Louvre President Christophe Leribault said that "all collections and precious objects" previously displayed in the gallery, which has remained closed since the theft, have been removed.

On October 19, 2025, a commando-style group entered the gallery using a boom truck and stole eight pieces of the French Crown Jewels in broad daylight. The jewels, which have not yet been recovered, are valued at approximately €88 million.

The jewels that were not stolen will be moved to a secure vault with no windows elsewhere in the museum, Leribault said.

"There is a great deal of work to be done, but we need to find the ideal location. And the funding," he added.

The Louvre heist shocked the world and exposed significant security shortcomings at the world's most visited museum, which welcomes around 9 million visitors annually.

The theft also triggered a leadership crisis at the Louvre, leading to the replacement of former president Laurence des Cars by Christophe Leribault.

Security issues at the Louvre had been "pushed into the background" in recent years, according to a French parliamentary commission on museum security in mid-May.
