An impressive display featuring 2,977 drones recreated the silhouettes of the Twin Towers over New York City in memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Each light represented one of the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and in the crash of Flight 93.

The display took place Wednesday evening, September 9, in New York Harbor, ahead of ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. At one point, the points of light came together to form the Twin Towers at their actual architectural scale, as they appeared before the 2001 attacks, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The public art installation, titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” was created in collaboration with artists, producers, victims’ families, survivors and members of emergency response teams. The display took place near the site where the annual “Tribute in Light” memorial is held, featuring two powerful beams of light symbolizing the Twin Towers.

According to the New York Post, the display was sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts and required the temporary suspension of flights by some small aircraft in the area.

In addition to the image of the Twin Towers, the drones also formed a spiral inspired by an architectural proposal for rebuilding the World Trade Center complex after the attacks, although that design was ultimately not selected for construction.

The United States marks the 25th anniversary today of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, one of the darkest days in the country’s history. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the coordinated attacks carried out by 19 terrorists affiliated with al-Qaida, who hijacked four passenger planes.

Official ceremonies are being held today in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. At the 9/11 Memorial ceremony in New York, the names of the victims will be read aloud, while moments of silence will mark key moments of the tragedy.
