Prosecutors in Rome have opened an investigation against unknown persons on suspicion of human trafficking and sexual violence against minors in connection with the scandal surrounding the late convicted American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The U.S. Department of Justice has also requested confidential documents from the Epstein files, CE Report quotes STA.

The investigation was launched following a complaint filed in March by the Differenza Donna association. The organization conducted a detailed analysis of the extensive files on Jeffrey Epstein published in the United States. Epstein was at the center of a scandal involving the sexual exploitation of minors and died in prison in 2019.

The investigation, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Maurizio Arcuri, aims to determine whether Italian citizens abroad or individuals operating in Italy may have been involved in criminal activities, Italian public broadcaster Rai reported on its website.
