Protesters throw pyrotechnics at EULEX base in Kosovo

The Kosovo Police said a group of protesters threw hard objects and pyrotechnic devices at the EULEX base on the Prishtina–Fushë Kosovë road late Wednesday evening.

According to the police, at around 10:30 p.m., a number of protesters who had been gathered near the Government building moved toward the EULEX base, which is located near the green market, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

After arriving near the entrance to the facility, the protesters blocked the road. They then began throwing various objects, hard objects and pyrotechnic devices, according to a police statement issued after midnight.

The statement also said that a small part of the facility caught fire as a result of the pyrotechnic devices. The fire was extinguished immediately.

“Police officers continuously spoke with the protesters and asked them to protest peacefully and not to throw objects or dangerous devices toward state buildings,” the police said.According to the statement, the protest ended around 20 minutes after midnight. No major incidents or injuries among protesters or police officers were reported.

The police thanked citizens for their cooperation and understanding, particularly during temporary traffic disruptions.

It said it would continue its presence and patrols in the field to ensure constitutional order and public safety in the country.

The protest was held as an expression of citizens’ dissatisfaction with the Specialist Chambers’ ruling in The Hague on Wednesday, which found the four former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders guilty. Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi were each sentenced to 25 years in prison, Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.

EULEX is the European Union’s rule-of-law mission in Kosovo. The European Union is the main funder of the Specialist Chambers, which are based in The Hague, the Netherlands.
