Russell Brand's wife testifies in London sexual assault trial
The wife of British comedian and influencer Russell Brand, who is on trial in London facing multiple charges of rape and sexual assault, told the court on Thursday that monogamy had been "difficult" for him, but that he had become an "extraordinary husband", AFP reported.
Six women have accused Russell Brand of rape and sexual assault allegedly committed between 1999 and 2009, when he was a famous stand-up comedian and television presenter, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Russell Brand denies the allegations against him, arguing that although he once had a very active sex life with numerous partners, all his relationships were consensual.
His wife, Laura Gallacher, who has attended most of the court hearings and frequently appears on Russell Brand's YouTube channel, which has more than six million subscribers, testified on Thursday morning.
"Russell, my husband, is caring, kind and a wonderful father to our children. He is an extraordinary husband, very present," said the 39-year-old woman as Russell Brand, 51, watched from the dock.
The couple began their relationship in 2006, when she was 19. Speaking about their early romantic relationship, Laura Gallacher said that Russell Brand had been "very attentive". However, their relationship ended because he was having affairs with other women, she explained.
"It was obvious that he found it difficult to be monogamous," Laura Gallacher said.
During his testimony on Wednesday, Russell Brand admitted that he had been "obsessed" with sex.
After their separation, the two remained in contact as friends, but they probably did not see each other between 2011 and 2014. They eventually married in 2017 and have three children.
Russell Brand was also briefly married to American singer Katy Perry, from 2010 to 2011.
The comedian's trial, involving a man who has become a prominent anti-establishment voice on social media and converted to Christianity, is now approaching its final stage.
The jury is due to retire to deliberate on Tuesday. According to AFP, if found guilty, Russell Brand faces the possibility of a life sentence.
