Online English dictionary Dictionary.com has selected "maxxing" as its 2026 Word of the Year, highlighting the growing influence of internet slang and society's increasing focus on self-improvement and optimization.

The announcement, made on October 26, followed an evaluation of words and expressions that shaped language, culture and online conversations throughout the year, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

According to Dictionary.com, "maxxing" stood out among the shortlisted candidates because it reflects a widespread cultural trend toward maximizing nearly every aspect of everyday life.

The term, which originated in online forums before spreading across social media platforms, describes the practice of pursuing an activity to its fullest potential or optimizing a particular aspect of one's life.

Derived from words such as "maximum" and "maximize," the expression can be used independently or combined with other words to create new terms.

One of its most recognizable variations is "looksmaxxing," which refers to efforts to improve physical appearance as much as possible.

Another example is "tokenmaxxing," a term associated with making extensive use of artificial intelligence tools, particularly in professional environments.

Other variations include "sleepmaxxing," which focuses on improving sleep quality, and "gymmaxxing," referring to efforts to maximize workout results.

Dictionary.com said the term's growing popularity illustrates how digital communities influence modern language and introduce expressions that eventually become part of mainstream conversations.

The website's editors examined search trends, social media activity and news coverage to identify words that best represented the cultural developments of 2026.

Searches for "maxxing" and related expressions increased significantly throughout the year, reflecting growing interest in the concept across social media, wellness, fitness and technology discussions.

The word can also carry different meanings depending on the context. While some people use it seriously to describe efforts toward self-improvement, others use it humorously to exaggerate the pursuit of perfection.

The dictionary noted that the expression captures a broader cultural fascination with productivity, personal development and the desire to get the most out of everyday experiences.

Among the other shortlisted candidates for the 2026 Word of the Year were "affordability," reflecting concerns about the cost of living, and "data center," highlighting the growing importance of infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence.

The shortlist also included "odyssey," which gained renewed attention following Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of Homer's epic, and "unc," an internet slang term often used to describe someone considered old-fashioned or out of touch.

The selection of "maxxing" follows Dictionary.com's decision to name "67," pronounced "six-seven," its Word of the Year for 2025.

Unlike last year's largely nonsensical viral expression, "maxxing" has developed a recognizable meaning and a wide range of applications.

Its selection underscores the growing influence of online communities on the English language and how internet expressions can evolve into defining cultural terms.
