Nawrocki, Zelensky Hold First Call, Raise Volhynia Issue
Polish President-elect Karol Nawrocki and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held their first phone call on Thursday, initiated by Zelensky, according to Nawrocki's spokesperson Rafal Leskiewicz, CE Report quotes PAP
Zelensky congratulated Nawrocki on his election victory, while the Polish president-elect brought up the sensitive topic of the Volhynia massacre, a key issue in his campaign and a historical point of friction between the two nations.
Nawrocki said he aims to be “the voice of the nation” calling for changes in Ukraine’s stance on unresolved historical matters, with further talks planned. He previously emphasized the importance of remembrance over revenge for the roughly 100,000 Polish victims of the 1943–45 massacre by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
Despite the historical dispute, Nawrocki reiterated Poland’s full support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, calling Moscow a "neo-imperialistic state ruled by a war criminal."
Zelensky later confirmed the call on X, announcing upcoming reciprocal visits to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Nawrocki will officially assume office on August 6, succeeding President Andrzej Duda.
