President Signs Magistrates' Retirement Decrees

Romania

President Nicușor Dan signed retirement decrees on Friday for 73 magistrates, including High Court President Corina-Alina Corbu. Of these, 66 retirements take effect on August 1 and the rest on September 1. Dan also approved the reassignment of 22 magistrates and acknowledged one resignation, CE Report quotes AGERPRES

The move comes amid mounting tensions over judicial reform. The Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM) had earlier accused the president of delaying the decrees. Dan addressed the issue, highlighting disorganization in the retirement process, with most applications lacking clear dates and proper notice.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan recently proposed raising the retirement age for magistrates to 65 and capping pensions at 70% of the last net salary, instead of the current 80% of gross income.

Judicial associations strongly opposed the changes, calling them unconstitutional and destabilizing. They urged the Supreme Court and CSM to take the matter to the Constitutional Court. According to the Romanian Judges Forum, over 1,000 judges and prosecutors may retire or resign if the changes are passed.
