Corund Stream Diverted to Protect Praid Salt Mine

Romania

Emergency works to fully divert the Corund stream in Harghita County were completed Monday using a corrugated pipe system, following flooding that threatened the Praid salt mine, CE Report quotes AGERPRES

Nicolae Sebastian Soltuz, investment director at the National Salt Company, said the diversion was finished earlier than scheduled due to heavy rainfall that overwhelmed existing pumps.

Paul Bejan, director of the construction firm, called the project unprecedented in Romania. The operation was risky due to the age and poor documentation of the mine, with constant danger of collapse. The new system now fully isolates the stream from the salt deposit.

Concreting and slope anchoring work remains, and a buffer zone for future flood control is still needed. While wildlife has returned to the area, tourist access remains restricted due to residual risks.
