Moldova grants citizenship to former Romanian President
President of Moldova Maia Sandu signed a decree today granting Moldovan citizenship to former Romanian President Traian Băsescu as a sign of recognition for his constant support for Moldova, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
“President Băsescu supported the citizens of Moldova with all his strength and unconditionally, regardless of the governments in Chișinău. Mr. Băsescu knows how much struggle has taken place on this land to preserve our identity, the Romanian language, and to break away from the Soviet past so that we can move forward toward a European future,” the head of state declared.
At the same time, granting citizenship is meant to correct an injustice previously done to Traian Băsescu.
“Mr. Băsescu, from today you are not only our brother, but also our fellow citizen. We are waiting for you at home,” President Sandu added.
