Moldova and Romania advance strategic cross-border projects
The Republic of Moldova and Romania are set to strengthen cooperation in transport infrastructure through a new bilateral agreement aimed at advancing strategic projects designed to improve connectivity between the two neighboring countries, MOLDPRES reported.
The parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy has approved a consultative opinion authorizing Moldova's delegation to begin negotiations with the Romanian side on the signing of the agreement, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
According to the authorities, the document will regulate the construction, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure projects of common interest, including the road bridge over the Prut River at Ungheni, one of the most important connectivity projects between Moldova and Romania.
The new agreement will replace the document signed in 2022 and will expand bilateral cooperation by introducing a coordinated border control mechanism. The measure is expected to facilitate cross-border traffic, reduce waiting times, and improve the efficiency of border crossings.
The agreement will also help secure European funding for joint infrastructure projects. These initiatives are linked to the development of the final section of the A8 Motorway, connecting Târgu Mureș, Iași, and Ungheni on Romanian territory, as well as the first segment of the future Ungheni–Chișinău–Odesa motorway on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
Authorities emphasize that the development of cross-border infrastructure and Moldova's integration into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) remain strategic priorities. The new Ungheni road bridge is expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods while supporting trade growth and regional economic development.
Following its signing, the agreement will be submitted for ratification by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
The Ungheni (Moldova) – Ungheni (Romania) road bridge, also known by its symbolic name "Flower Bridge," will be the first new bridge built across the Prut River in more than 60 years and the first motorway-standard bridge connecting the two countries.
The project is widely regarded as a landmark step in strengthening economic ties, transport integration, and Moldova's broader European connectivity ambitions.
