The 20-year-old, who had already won the 200m freestyle gold, broke the competition and European records. His time was just 0.11 seconds shy of the world record set by China’s Zhanle Pan at the 2024 Olympics.

Popovici, who earned bronze in the 100m at the Paris Olympics, entered the final with the second-fastest semifinal time. This victory marks his second world title in the 100m freestyle, after winning in 2022.

Silver went to American Jack Alexy (46.92), with Australia’s Kyle Chalmers taking bronze (47.17).
