The LIFE Renata project organized a study visit to Natura 2000 sites in Central Macedonia, Greece, offering experts and partners from the Republic of Moldova a valuable opportunity for practical learning in ecosystem management, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The visit, conducted under the guidance of the Protected Areas Management Unit of Central Macedonia, included guided tours and technical presentations in ecologically significant areas. Participants explored Axios Delta National Park and the Nea Agathoupoli wetland, both key sites within the Natura 2000 network.

Scientific staff from the host unit highlighted the importance of connectivity and ecological integrity of these sites, while also pointing to the intense anthropogenic pressures affecting these ecosystems.

“Discussions focused on innovative solutions and cooperation strategies with stakeholders, necessary to balance human activities with conservation needs. The program was complemented by practical demonstrations of habitat monitoring, biodiversity assessment, and birdwatching activities, offering an operational perspective on environmental policies. This study visit represents a vital component of the LIFE Renata project, connecting theoretical knowledge with field realities. By promoting cross-border knowledge exchange, the project contributes to more effective and coordinated environmental governance, preparing the Republic of Moldova for optimal management of the Emerald Network,” explained EcoContact.

LIFE Renata is co-financed by the European Union and aims to support Moldova in advancing the management of the Emerald Network and aligning with EU standards. The project provides legal, technical, and operational support, focusing on improving institutional capacities through a deeper understanding of EU Habitats Directives, modern monitoring and reporting tools, the creation of a knowledge hub and advanced GIS database, and strengthening species protection in existing Emerald sites.

The success of these initiatives is based on a strong partnership of six organizations: Lever S.A. Development Consultants (coordinator), ICAS, EKBY, kartECO, EcoContact, and the Ministry of Environment of Moldova. Together, they aim to ensure a sustainable future and biodiversity protection in line with the highest European standards.
