Over 800 churches and historic monuments in the Republic of Moldova may return to state administration, a move aimed primarily at protecting and conserving the country’s cultural heritage, according to Culture Minister Cristian Jardan, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The decision follows an evaluation that will assess the condition of these sites and determine the best long-term maintenance solutions.

Minister Jardan emphasized that the transfer’s goal is the proper management and protection of Moldova’s cultural heritage.

“Over 800 historic monuments will return to state ownership. After that, we need to evaluate their condition. We are discussing multiple solutions, but the final decision will follow the Supreme Court ruling, after which a resolution will be adopted,” Jardan said.

He noted the sensitivity of the issue, stressing that a balanced and careful approach is necessary to avoid social conflicts while preserving the integrity of the monuments.

Authorities are also considering local community involvement in managing the religious sites—a model successfully applied in the village of Dereneu.

“Ideally, the decision should be made by local communities. This approach worked in Dereneu, where over 300 people voted on a solution. It is best if these monuments are used by the community, potentially shared between the two metropolises,” Jardan explained.

The issue gained public attention in February 2026, when tensions escalated at the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” Church in Dereneu, Călărași district, after the Supreme Court of Justice of Moldova confirmed the usage rights of the religious community.
