“It’s always fun to return and explore, and also to try to understand who these characters have become and what more we can bring to them each time. They have matured, and so have we.”

Those were the words of Zendaya, wearing a stunning spiderweb-inspired dress in shades of gray — a vintage Armani design from the Spring/Summer 1990 collection — during a special Spider-Man event held outside Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Zendaya appeared alongside her husband, Tom Holland, for the launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The latest Marvel superhero adventure is set to arrive in theaters on July 29.

The fortress was illuminated in red and blue, the iconic colors of Spider-Man's suit, while projections and video mapping dedicated to the film covered the historic landmark.

After emerging from Castel Sant'Angelo, the two actors walked along a blue carpet stretching across part of the bridge, where photographers and journalists awaited them. Crowds of Romans and tourists gathered along the riverbank, cheering as the stars passed by.

In the film, Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, while Zendaya returns as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, the superhero's former girlfriend.

The pair first met ten years ago during the filming of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first installment of Sony's rebooted Spider-Man franchise. The upcoming release will be the fourth film in the series.

“I always thought Spider-Man was what made Peter Parker special,” Holland said, dressed in a Louis Vuitton suit. “But then I realized that it's actually Peter Parker who makes Spider-Man special. That's why people love him so much — it's not the hero, but the human being we become attached to.”

Asked about Spider-Man's enduring optimism, Zendaya reflected on finding hope in today's world.

“Sometimes I don't feel very optimistic, but then I see so much hope in my nephews, my friends, my family — and in him,” she said, pointing to Holland. “Those are the things that make me happy every day and give me the strength to keep going. And I think a large part of this film is about exactly that: the need for support and the need for love.”

Holland and Zendaya married in early 2026 in a private ceremony that remained secret until a few weeks ago, when Holland confirmed the marriage during an interview.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes place in a world where no one remembers Peter Parker or Spider-Man.

“I think this film can also represent everyday heroes, the unknown heroes,” Holland said.

He concluded by sharing his affection for the Italian capital:

“I love Rome. I think it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world, if not the most beautiful. I love the atmosphere here. It's a city that honors its history, and the streets are incredible... although it's really hot today.”
