European grid operators take measures ahead of solar eclipse

European electricity transmission system operators have completed preparations to ensure grid security ahead of the solar eclipse on August 12, which is expected to cause a temporary decline of up to 9.7 gigawatts in photovoltaic electricity generation.

According to information compiled from a statement by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), the Moon's passage in front of the Sun will temporarily reduce solar power generation across large parts of Europe, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Under clear-sky conditions, photovoltaic output across Europe could fall by as much as 9.7 gigawatts. The rapid but predictable change in generation is expected to occur between 19:15 and 21:30 Central European Summer Time.

Spain and Germany are expected to experience the largest impact on solar-based electricity generation.

The main challenge for the electricity system will not only be the temporary reduction in solar generation, but also the speed at which the change occurs. Because electricity production and consumption must remain continuously balanced, rapid fluctuations in solar generation are important for system operators managing the grid in real time.

As the eclipse progresses, solar generation is expected to decline before rising again as the Moon moves away from the Sun. System operators will therefore need to manage both the reduction in generation and the rapid recovery following the eclipse.

Coordinated measures by system operators

ENTSO-E and European transmission system operators have taken a series of coordinated measures to ensure the safe and stable operation of the electricity system during the eclipse.

Control-centre operators have been briefed in advance about the expected effects of the eclipse. Electricity market participants have also been informed about the anticipated decline in solar generation.

Additional and updated photovoltaic generation forecasts are being provided by meteorological service providers to support local system operators in making real-time decisions.

Transmission system operators are also avoiding planned grid outages during the eclipse period in order to maintain the highest possible level of operational flexibility.

ENTSO-E has activated a dedicated task force to coordinate preparations, monitor developments and facilitate information exchange among European system operators before and after the eclipse.

Solar power accounts for 13 percent of EU generation

According to ENTSO-E, solar energy has become an important part of Europe's electricity generation mix, accounting for approximately 13 percent of total electricity generation in the European Union in 2025.

As the share of renewable energy in the electricity system increases, the ability to predict and manage short-term changes in generation caused by weather conditions and natural phenomena is becoming increasingly important for grid security.

ENTSO-E said that as Europe continues its energy transition, the ability to respond rapidly to short-term fluctuations in renewable generation will be a key element of operating a safe, reliable and efficient electricity system.

The network represents 40 transmission system operators from 36 countries. These operators are responsible for the safe and coordinated operation of Europe's interconnected electricity system.
