Montenegro adopts negotiating position on EU Environment and Climate chapter
By adopting its negotiating position for Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change, Montenegro has fulfilled its obligations under the national preparations for the final stage of negotiations, creating the conditions for the provisional closure of this demanding negotiating chapter.
Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development Damjan Ćulafić described the achievement as an important step in Montenegro’s European integration process, CE Report informs via the Montenegrin government website.
“By adopting its negotiating position for Chapter 27, Montenegro confirms that it has fulfilled key obligations as part of its national preparations for the final stage of negotiations. This achievement reflects the intensive work of the relevant institutions and negotiating structures, as well as our determination to translate commitments under the European agenda into concrete reforms,” Ćulafić emphasized.
He stressed that efforts to fulfil the remaining obligations would continue in cooperation with the European Commission.
“In the coming period, our focus will be on continuing cooperation with the European Commission, finalizing the remaining procedures and consistently implementing the adopted legislation to ensure the full application of European standards in the fields of environment and climate change.
“Our goal is not merely to meet the negotiating benchmarks but to establish a long-term sustainable environmental protection system that will bring tangible benefits to citizens.
“For Montenegro, as a constitutionally defined ecological state, Chapter 27 represents much more than a negotiating obligation. It is a matter of national responsibility, preserving one of our most valuable resources and ensuring the country’s long-term development prospects.
“Therefore, we must not view European environmental standards solely as a condition for membership in the European Union, but as a lasting responsibility towards our country and its citizens,” the minister stated.
