Retired decorator becomes millionaire selling Pokémon cards
A retired decorator has become a millionaire after selling a collection of Pokémon cards at auction.
The BBC reports that his collection, which had been left in the attic for 15 years, was sold at Ewbank’s auction house for £1.56 million, CE Report quotes ANSA.
“When we saw what he owned — everything in perfect, like-new condition — we couldn’t believe it,” said James Spooner, head of the trading cards department.
The Surrey-based auction house added that this was the most successful sale in its more than 30-year history, suggesting it could even be a European record.
The highlight of the collection was the “Legendary Collection Complete Master Set,” which included a Charizard card in near-perfect condition.
The set was initially valued at between £15,000 and £20,000, but the final sale price reached £100,000.
According to Ewbank’s auction house, this record-breaking Pokémon card collection sale surpassed the previous record, set just on October 9 in London, when an auction at Stanley Gibbons raised £872,000.
