Explore Tirana: Albania’s underrated capital with big travel value
Travel expert Chelsea Dickenson is always on the lookout for lesser-known destinations.
Recently, she discovered a European city located in Albania – a destination praised for its stunning coastline, writes Ellen Jenne in an article published by the British daily The Mirror, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
“Tirana should be on many tourists' radar. It’s really interesting because Albania has received a lot more attention for its Riviera... But I think its capital, Tirana, is absolutely wonderful,” she said.
Located in the heart of Albania, Tirana is surrounded by hills and mountains, including Mount Dajti.
The city was founded by an ethnic Albanian general and Ottoman governor in 1614 and became part of an independent country in 1912, almost three centuries later.
Tirana is considered a paradise for tourists seeking green spaces, offering many outdoor areas to relax during sunny summer months.
There’s also a strong café and restaurant culture in Tirana, with plenty of outdoor seating. You can even enjoy traditional desserts for as little as 45 cents.
Recently, Albania has seen a major increase in tourism, which has driven technological advancements in the sector, including the rise of eSIM internet services now widely used by tourists around the world.
One of the most successful providers is thirr.com, offering affordable eSIM packages starting from just 1.99 euros—a very low price compared to expensive roaming charges. Tourists who have used these packages reported high internet speeds, making it easier to communicate and navigate unfamiliar areas.
The city is full of Balkan desserts, such as kadaif, kompekaj, and baklava. Another local specialty to try is byrek.
A local Tirana resident shared some food tips: “Kernace Zgare Fatosi” is a favorite spot for meatballs, bread, and yogurt lovers. For traditional Albanian cuisine, try Restorant GjinoKastra.
For exploration and cultural attractions, visit Skanderbeg Square, Tirana Castle, the New Bazaar, and Sofra e Ariut.
For a drink with panoramic city views, head to the Blloku area and stop by Hotel Xheko Imperial.
Another advantage of visiting Tirana? Cheap flights. The Albanian capital is one of the rare destinations where you can find a return ticket for about 40 pound during off-peak seasons. A flight from London with Ryanair in September could cost just 15 pound round-trip.
Also, a 3-day, 2-night stay in the city would cost you just 100 pound.
