Slovenian mountain huts face severe water shortages

Travel

Mountain huts across Slovenia are once again attracting large numbers of visitors this year. The season, particularly at high-altitude huts, is being marked by a severe shortage of water. In some locations, the situation has become critical, prompting hut managers to ask visitors for understanding and responsible behavior.

The lack of water is creating additional challenges for huts located in remote and high-altitude areas, where supplies are more difficult to replenish. Visitors are therefore being encouraged to use water sparingly and follow the instructions of hut staff, CE Report quotes STA.

Mountain huts have also introduced changes to their house rules. Under the new rules, visitors are discouraged from simply consuming food they have brought with them, as hut operators are trying to reduce the impact of large visitor numbers and support the operation of the facilities.

Another growing concern is the amount of waste left behind by visitors. With mountain huts seeing heavy traffic, waste management has become increasingly demanding, particularly in locations where rubbish must be transported down from remote areas.

Hut operators are consequently calling on hikers and other visitors to act responsibly, respect the local environment and help preserve Slovenia’s mountain areas during the busy summer season.
