Etna eruption halts flights to Catania airport

Travel

Flights to Catania Airport have been temporarily suspended after an eruption of Mount Etna on Italy’s Sicily island produced a cloud of volcanic ash.

Airport operator SAC said in a statement on social media that incoming flights had been suspended until 3:00 p.m. local time after ash from Mount Etna spread into the airspace surrounding the airport, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

The company said the situation had significantly affected operations at Catania Airport and advised passengers to check the status of their flights with their airlines before traveling to the airport.

At approximately 3,300 meters, Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in continental Europe.
