Slovenia proposes stricter requirements for foreign residents
Slovenia’s Interior Ministry has proposed additional amendments to the Foreigners Act that would tighten the conditions for foreigners seeking residence permits.
Under the proposal, applicants would have to demonstrate monthly means of subsistence of EUR 1,015, roughly twice the current requirement. The measure is intended to ensure that foreigners applying for residence have sufficient financial resources to support themselves while living in Slovenia, CE Report quotes STA.
The amendments would also raise the required level of knowledge of the Slovenian language for certain residence procedures. The government says the changes are aimed at strengthening the integration of foreigners into Slovenian society and ensuring that residence applicants meet clearer financial and language requirements.
The ministry has extended the public consultation until August 26, allowing interested individuals, organizations and other stakeholders to submit comments and proposals before the amendments proceed further.
The proposed changes come as Slovenia continues to review its immigration and residence rules amid growing attention to the integration of foreign nationals and the conditions attached to legal residence.
