Two Slovenian campsites make Europe’s top list

One is well known among camping enthusiasts, the other is a well-kept secret even among Slovenian tent lovers. Both have now made it to a list of Europe's most beautifully located campsites, chosen by experts for the British newspaper The Guardian.

The Šenkova Domačija, a mountain farmstead near Zgornje Jezersko in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, close to the border with Austria, is described by The Guardian as "one of the most scenic" campsites in Europe, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.

"This heritage farmstead dates to 1517 and is surrounded by pastures and peaks. The farm has 25 pitches in a meadow under old ash trees, plus a communal campfire and kitchen, a shop and restaurant serving breakfast and dinner."

The Guardian notes that campers can ride horses on short guided hacks or longer treks into the mountains, or tackle the trails on foot.

Camping Menina, in the Upper Savinja Valley in east Slovenia, is famous far and wide for its canoeing and rafting. The campsite was badly damaged in the August 2023 floods but has now been completely renovated and reopened last summer after almost a year of hard work.

"This is a big, family-run, riverside campsite surrounded by forest. The Savinja River feeds the camp's lake - there is swimming and paddleboarding on the lake and aquatrekking and bellyaking down the river," The Guardian says.

The campsite also boasts an adrenaline park, sports park, a shop, a pancake house, restaurant and spa. There are 200 pitches.

The newspaper's list was compiled by experts.

"We asked camping pros to tell us about their favourite sites, from the highest pitches in Switzerland to a wilderness reserve in Sweden," the paper says.
