Swedish Social Democrats face worst result in more than century

In Sweden’s election, the result remains too close to call after more than 90% of the votes have been counted.

The opposition left-wing bloc is currently holding a narrow lead over the right-wing bloc, but both its leader Magdalena Andersson and incumbent conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson say they are prepared to form a government, CE Report quotes STA.

The Social Democrats are heading for their worst result in more than a century, with around 28% of the vote. Kristersson, whose Moderate Party is expected to receive nearly 20%, warned of major differences between the parties on the left and said they would struggle to agree on a government programme.

The far-right Sweden Democrats, meanwhile, have lost support for the first time since entering parliament in 2010, with the party expected to receive 17.6% of the vote.

Several party leaders expect the final result to remain unknown for several more days.
