Croatian National Council president seeks new mandate in Serbia

Jasna Vojnić, president of the Croatian National Council in Serbia and the Croatian National Vision (HNV) movement, called on members of the Croatian community to turn out for the upcoming elections for national minority councils in Serbia and once again place their trust in her.

Speaking at the HNV's final campaign event in Subotica, attended by around 400 people, she highlighted a series of successful projects carried out by her team with unprecedented support from Croatia, CE Report quotes HINA.

Among the achievements she listed were the construction of the Croatian House in Subotica, a kindergarten in the village of Tavankut, the construction of seven new Croatian cultural centers across Vojvodina, and the implementation of a €2 million support program for farmers from the Croatian community. She said she would continue working to strengthen Croats in Serbia.

"The most important and crucial thing is to build and strengthen our institutions. In addition to the Croatian National Council, we need specialized associations that can take on responsibilities in order to secure more funding and improve organization within the community," Vojnić said, pointing to positive examples in agriculture and the implementation of extracurricular activities.

Vojnić said that political tensions and anti-Croatian narratives in Serbia were not affecting their campaign, adding that more problems were coming from within the community due to certain individuals and their negative public statements.

"We have some individuals and very small groups, at the level of a statistical error, so to speak, who are undermining cohesion within the Croatian community," she said.

Elections for members of national minority councils in Serbia are held every four years, with unofficial reports suggesting they will take place in November.

According to information currently available, the Croatian National Vision movement, represented by Jasna Vojnić, is competing in the election, along with a list backed by cultural associations from Tavankut called "Together for HNV."

The Croatian National Council is the umbrella representative body of the Croatian national minority in Serbia, with responsibilities in education, culture, information, and the official use of the Croatian language and script.
