OpenAI is considering slowing down the pace of development of its most advanced artificial intelligence systems amid growing concerns about the risks associated with AI becoming uncontrollable.

Bloomberg reported that during an internal meeting held this week, CEO Sam Altman indicated that OpenAI could coordinate with other developers in the industry to reduce the speed of development, CE Report quotes ANSA.

The debate over whether AI development should be slowed comes as the world’s leading technology companies compete to build increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.

OpenAI, founded in 2015 as a nonprofit research organization before evolving into a major commercial AI company, has been one of the main drivers of the current AI boom. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 brought generative AI into the mainstream and triggered a race among technology companies to develop more capable models.

Since then, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other developers have invested billions of dollars in AI research and computing infrastructure. The competition has increasingly shifted from chatbots that generate text and images toward “agentic” systems capable of using computers, browsing the internet, writing and executing code, conducting research and carrying out complex tasks with limited human intervention.

That progress has also intensified concerns about AI safety. Researchers have warned that systems with greater autonomy could behave unpredictably, misuse access to computer networks or other tools, or become difficult to control as their capabilities increase.

OpenAI and its competitors have responded by introducing additional testing, monitoring and safety measures before releasing their most advanced models. At the same time, governments in the United States and elsewhere are under pressure to establish rules governing the development and deployment of frontier AI.

The central question is now how to balance technological progress with safety. Supporters of rapid development argue that advanced AI could deliver major gains in science, medicine, productivity and the economy. Safety researchers, however, warn that increasingly capable systems could create risks that are difficult to reverse if safeguards fail.

Against this backdrop, any move by OpenAI to slow the development of its most advanced systems would be closely watched across the industry, particularly as rival companies continue competing to achieve the next major breakthrough in AI.
