A judge in the US state of New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for allegedly misleading users about its privacy protection practices.

New Mexico filed a lawsuit against the company in 2021 following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, accusing the technology giant, led by Mark Zuckerberg, of making misleading statements about how it protected users’ personal information, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Last month, a jury found that Meta had committed approximately 43 million violations of New Mexico’s consumer protection laws.

The jury determined that each violation could carry a penalty of $5,000.

The case centers on allegations that Meta misrepresented its privacy practices and failed to provide users with accurate information about the protection of their personal data.
