Moldova-EU Summit Boosts Integration
The first Moldova–EU bilateral summit, held in Chișinău on July 4, marked a milestone in the country's European integration, signaling a shift from promises to concrete support, government spokesperson Daniel Voda said in an interview with ONE TV, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES
Voda highlighted that the event was more than symbolic — it brought tangible results, including the announcement of a €270 million first installment from the EU’s €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova. These funds will support regional infrastructure, energy independence, healthcare, and business development.
“The EU is investing because it trusts Moldova’s commitment to reforms,” Voda noted, adding that projects include modernizing 600 km of roads, building hospitals in Cahul and Bălți, and strengthening defense with radar systems and training—not as militarization, but to improve Moldova’s security.
He also underlined the strategic significance of the summit amid growing external threats. “Russia spent over €100 million last year trying to influence Moldova’s democracy. They failed,” Voda said, stressing the importance of upcoming elections being free from manipulation.
Voda concluded that the summit showed Moldova is no longer debating if it will join the EU, but when and how. “Moldova is now seen as a serious and reliable partner,” he said.
The summit was attended by Moldovan leaders Maia Sandu, Igor Grosu, and Dorin Recean, alongside EU officials Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa. A joint declaration reaffirmed the EU’s support and called for the swift opening of all negotiation chapters.
