Albania-U.S. partnership delivers new surgical breakthroughs
Thanks to cooperation of Albanian and American doctors from the “Albanian Health Found” organization, at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center (QSUT) in Tirana there are being performed complex operations using laparoscopic techniques.
This technique is an innovation for the treatment of large tumors that so far were dealt only with open surgery, CE Report quotes ATA.
In the video published on social networks by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Prof. Arben Gjata, head of the Surgery Service at Clinic 1, said that this cooperation has a 31-year tradition. “American doctors first came to Albania in 1991. The organization is called “Albanian Health Found”; it is a team of doctors who have helped us in all areas”.
“They are among the main contributors who support us in the development of “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center in a professional sense, but also in terms of equipment, assistance and training of doctors, both here and by taking some of the Albanian doctors from the QSUT to the USA over the years. We are currently working with Dr. William Nielson in surgery who is one of the best robotic surgeons in the USA”, said Gjata.
On his part, Dr. William Nelson, a robotic surgeon in the USA, said that it was a pleasure to be at QSUT and work with the Albanian surgeons, whom he praised for the extraordinary work they are doing.
“We are doing some laparoscopic hernia repairs, which have some benefits for patients but which are more complex than the normal way hernias are repaired in the USA”, said Nelson.
He added that these are new techniques, but which bring benefits to patients and it is fantastic to see the work that has been done in Clinic 1 of QSUT.
Nelson praised the modern and large operating rooms as well as the very good Albanian teams. “It’s a very good place to work,” he said.
