EU exempts smartwatches from battery rules

European Union

The European Union has added smartwatches, fitness trackers and electric toys to the list of products exempt from requirements mandating the removability and replaceability of portable batteries.

EU rules already exempt products such as medical devices, electric toothbrushes and oral irrigators for safety reasons, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Through a delegated act, the European Commission has now added six new categories of products to the exemption list. These include devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, electric toys, as well as equipment used in explosive atmospheres, including explosion-proof motors, sensors, pumps and forklifts.

The delegated act will now be submitted to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, which will have the opportunity to object to the text in its entirety, but will not be able to amend it.
