Kosovo opens UEFA Nations League campaign with victory over Ireland

Kosovo’s national football team opened its campaign in League B of the UEFA Nations League with a victory, defeating Ireland 1-0 at the “Fadil Vokrri” Stadium in Pristina.

The Dardanians produced an excellent performance and were the more attacking side throughout the match, creating a number of opportunities to score, CE Report informs via the Football Federation of Kosovo's official website.

The hero of the victory was captain Vedat Muriqi, who scored the decisive goal in the 83rd minute. Following a good attack initiated by Ermal Krasniqi, his shot was deflected and the ball struck the crossbar, while Muriqi reacted quickly to the rebound and headed the ball into the net from close range to make it 1-0.

Kosovo’s striker had two other chances to score during the match. In the 28th minute, Jayson Molumby cleared Muriqi’s shot off the goal line, while shortly before half-time, Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher produced an excellent save to deny the Kosovo captain’s header.

Veldin Hoxha also had a great opportunity in the first half, but his shot was stopped on the goal line by Dara O’Shea.

In the second half, Ireland had a good opportunity through Troy Parrott, but goalkeeper Arijanet Muriqi was in the right position to stop the Irish striker’s header.

The Dardanians created numerous chances in the second half, particularly in the closing minutes. Edon Veldin Hoxha had a good opportunity in the 56th minute but shot just wide of the post. In the 86th minute, Krasniqi fired wide from a very promising position. A minute later, Veldin Hoxha received a pass from Krasniqi and shot from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball went narrowly wide. In the 89th minute, Asllani assisted Avdullahu inside the box, but the goalkeeper reacted in time. In the continuation of the attack, Erblin Osmani took a shot, but the ball was deflected by a defender.

Kosovo’s dominance was also reflected in the statistics. The Dardanians registered 21 shots on goal, compared with just three attempts by Ireland.

The match was also notable for the debut of 17-year-old Bayern Munich talent Erblin Osmani.

The atmosphere created by the “Dardanët” supporters was excellent. At the start of the match, they displayed a powerful message reading “Unity, Liberation, Pride” in support of the Kosovo liberation fighters facing proceedings in The Hague.

The Dardanians will play their next match on Sunday at 18:00 in Vienna, against Austria.
