The direct tourist expenditure generated in 2025 by the luxury hotel sector is estimated at €10.4 billion, according to research by the Demoskopika Institute, published in advance by ANSA. This represents 17.3% of the total estimated expenditure in hotel establishments, which amounts to just over €60 billion.

Since 2008, overnight stays in the high-end segment have increased by 111.1%, while the overall hotel sector recorded growth of just 14.5%, CE Report quotes ANSA.

Each overnight stay in a luxury hotel is estimated to generate an average of €702 in direct tourist expenditure, compared with €209 for the hotel sector as a whole.

At the top of the Elite Index (Exclusive Luxury & International Tourism Evaluation), developed by Demoskopika, are Lazio, Trentino-Alto Adige, Campania, Valle d'Aosta and Sardinia.

However, luxury tourism remains concentrated in a limited number of destinations: 17 provinces account for 79.2% of all high-end overnight stays, while 25 provinces have no five-star hotels.

Furthermore, overnight stays in high-end accommodation facilities reached nearly 14.9 million, with more than 4.9 million arrivals, confirming Italy's growing appeal among high-spending travellers.

Compared with the twelve months of 2024, tourism activity in Italy's luxury segment recorded increases of 5.0% in arrivals and 5.7% in overnight stays, respectively.

The eleven high-spending countries identified by the study (Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia and Japan), which account for 62.2% of foreign overnight stays in hotel establishments, are estimated to have generated a total of €21.4 billion in revenue across the hotel sector, covering various components of tourist expenditure.
