Japan plans to deploy 10 million artificial intelligence-powered robots across 18 industries by 2040 to help address the country's shrinking workforce.

According to public broadcaster NHK, citing Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the government has unveiled its new AI robotics strategy, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Under the plan, AI-powered robots will be introduced across 18 sectors by 2040 as Japan seeks to offset the impact of its steadily declining labor force.

The targeted industries include manufacturing, infrastructure maintenance, healthcare, elderly care, disaster response, and defense.

The government will also allocate 380 billion Japanese yen (about $2.6 billion) to a project aimed at developing AI systems capable of operating in the physical world rather than being limited to computer screens.

Following a Cabinet meeting, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Akazawa Ryosei said data is already being collected in selected sectors and will be used to help make Japan a global leader in developing artificial intelligence for robotics.
