Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major industrialized nations agreed at the summit in the French city of Évian to increase pressure on Russia through additional energy sanctions aimed at helping bring an end to the war against Ukraine, diplomatic sources said.

U.S. President Donald Trump added that the United States could soon reinstate sanctions on Russian oil, CE Report quotes STA.

“The leaders decided today to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions related to gas and oil,” an unnamed French diplomatic source told AFP on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

The leaders also agreed that the dynamics of the war on the ground have changed, and that Ukraine is now in a “strong position,” while Russia is “under pressure,” diplomatic sources told AFP and DPA.

Trump dominates summit discussions

The G7 summit is continuing in the French town of Évian-les-Bains, hosted this year by French President Emmanuel Macron. Although the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East remain the main topics of discussion, the event has been largely overshadowed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump arrived at the summit strengthened by news of a preliminary agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the broader conflict involving Iran.
