Firefighters battle landfill blaze near North Macedonia's Strumica
Firefighters from the Strumica Territorial Firefighting Unit (TPPE) in North Macedonia have been battling a fire at the landfill near the village of Dobrašinci since the early morning hours.
According to a statement issued by the fire service late on Sunday, two fire engines and six firefighters remain on the scene, working continuously to contain and fully extinguish the blaze, CE Report quotes MIA.
The statement added that the Strumica Public Utility Company "Komunalec" is also actively involved in the operation, using heavy machinery to cover the landfill with soil in order to prevent the fire from reigniting.
"The fire has been brought under control, but due to the specific nature of landfill fires, our teams remain on site to ensure it is completely extinguished and the area is secured. We urge citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and follow official updates. We also call on everyone to act responsibly and avoid activities that could trigger new fires," the statement said.
The Strumica Territorial Firefighting Unit added that it will continue monitoring the situation until the fire is fully extinguished and will keep the public informed of any further developments.
