Serbia battles six wildfires across more than 1,100 hectares

Firefighters and emergency services in Serbia have brought a wildfire under control in the Deliblato Sands Special Nature Reserve, where members of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Interior Ministry have also been deployed.

Due to strong winds in the Stolovi area, and despite assistance from helicopters operated by Serbia’s Interior Ministry, a fire that has engulfed grass and low vegetation has not yet been fully extinguished. However, its spread to the pine forest has been prevented, CE Report quotes FENA.

According to Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), firefighting efforts are being hampered by strong winds and difficult terrain. A total of 21 vehicles and 58 people have been deployed to tackle the blaze.

A wildfire in the Žaračke Mountains, near the village of Seoci above Ušće, has been extinguished after burning approximately 90 hectares of pine forest.

Serbia’s Emergency Situations Headquarters said that six fires covering more than 1,100 hectares remain active across the country.

Firefighters are facing an additional challenge from the so-called “three-wind” pattern, characteristic of the Deliblato Sands, which makes the spread of the flames unpredictable.

As a preventive measure, efforts are being made to contain the fire by rapidly constructing or widening forest roads.
