A fire that broke out at the illegal Šišeta landfill in Goražde, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is currently under control, but the situation remains serious, Sanid Zirak, Assistant Mayor for Civil Protection, confirmed.

He said that members of the Goražde Professional Firefighting Unit, the municipal utility company and other services are on the scene, working to prevent the fire from spreading and extinguish the blaze, which, according to Zirak, is suspected to have been deliberately started, CE Report quotes FENA.

“There are indications that human involvement may have caused this dangerous situation and the fire, but this will be determined by investigators from the Cantonal Ministry of Interior’s Criminal Police Sector, who are also at the scene,” Zirak said.

He added that the fire remains under control for now and that efforts are underway to prevent the fire line from spreading with the help of available machinery. An emergency meeting of the City Civil Protection Headquarters was convened to arrange for additional machinery to be deployed.

Zirak warned that the emission of toxic particles into the atmosphere could have much more serious consequences and called on the relevant institutions to issue recommendations to residents, urging them to reduce the amount of time they spend outdoors.
