Greece’s new Heraklion airport nears completion

The new Heraklion International Airport, in Kastelli, Greece, is about to be completed, a project that is expected to radically change the map of air transport in Crete and which is set to develop into one of the most modern airports in the Mediterranean.

According to the progress data released by Christos Panagiotopoulos, CEO of TERNA, and Vangelis Masouras, Vice President of TERNA, the first test flights are scheduled for 2027, marking the beginning of the final stretch towards its operation, as the progress of the works is already at an extremely advanced stage, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

The project is being developed by the Heraklion Crete International Airport (HCIA), in which the Greek State participates with a 45.9% stake, the GEK TERNA Group with 32.46% and the Indian group GMR with 21.64%, while the construction is being implemented by TERNA S.A., the construction arm of the GEK TERNA Group.

In particular, according to the official presentation, the progress of the works by October 31, 2025, exceeded 65%, with the main construction phases nearing completion.
