“Smart Moldova” programme gains EU backing through new cooperation deal
The Republic of Moldova has taken a new step toward strengthening its research and innovation sector through a cooperation framework with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), aimed at supporting the implementation of the National Smart Specialisation Programme for 2024–2027, “Smart Moldova.”
The framework agreement was signed during the Republic of Moldova–European Union Summit in Brussels by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi. The document expands cooperation between Moldovan institutions and the European Commission’s in-house science and knowledge service in the fields of research and innovation, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
According to Popșoi, the implementation of the “Smart Moldova” programme is important not only for the development of the country’s innovation ecosystem but also for advancing the European Union Growth Plan for Moldova and supporting progress in the EU accession process, particularly regarding Chapter 25 on Science and Research.
The agreement provides for a range of joint activities, including training workshops, scientific conferences, exchanges of expertise, and reciprocal visits by delegations to research institutions in Moldova and JRC facilities.
A key component of the partnership is the opportunity for Moldovan researchers to undertake research placements within the specialized infrastructures of the Joint Research Centre, giving them access to advanced scientific resources and international collaboration networks.
According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the JRC will support the implementation of “Smart Moldova” through international expertise, specialist involvement, data provision, and strategic analysis tools. Moldova, in turn, will facilitate the participation of public institutions, academic organizations, and private-sector representatives in joint research and innovation initiatives.
The framework agreement will remain in force for three years, with the possibility of extension, further strengthening cooperation between Moldova and the European Union in science, innovation, and technological development.
