Poland makes history with third Volleyball Nations League championship

The Poland men's national volleyball team has won the title in this season's Volleyball Nations League.

At the Final Eight tournament in Ningbo, China, Poland defeated the United States 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-10) in a marathon final to successfully defend its crown, CE Report quotes STA.

The Polish team, which eliminated Slovenia in the semifinals, retained the title and claimed a record third Volleyball Nations League championship.

After defeating Italy 3-0 in last year's final, Poland has now become the most successful team in the history of the competition, which was first launched in 2018. France and Russia have won two titles each, while Brazil has one.

Poland, currently ranked No. 1 in the FIVB world rankings, also extended its remarkable medal streak in the tournament. The team has now finished on the podium seven consecutive times, with its only failure to reach the top three coming in the inaugural 2018 edition.

Meanwhile, the United States reached the Nations League final for the fourth time after previous appearances in 2019, 2022, and 2023, but once again fell short of winning the title and had to settle for silver. The Americans were also defeated by Poland in the 2023 final and claimed bronze in the inaugural 2018 tournament. Despite not having won gold, the United States remains the second-most decorated team in Volleyball Nations League history by total medals.

The American defeat also meant that Slovenia, which secured its first-ever Nations League medal by winning bronze earlier in the day, moved up to fourth place in the FIVB world rankings, overtaking the United States by just over one-tenth of a ranking point.

The United States started the match better and took an early lead in the opening set, but Poland gradually found its rhythm and comfortably claimed the first set. Poland again opened strongly in the second set, only for the Americans to take control and level the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Poland led for much of the contest, but the United States forced extra points and edged the set to move ahead 2-1.

The fourth set was evenly contested throughout, but Poland held its nerve in the closing stages to force a decisive fifth set. Midway through the tiebreak, the Poles scored five consecutive points and never relinquished their six-point advantage.

Kamil Semeniuk led Poland with 17 points, while Wilfredo Leon and Tomasz Fornal each added 15, with Fornal recording five aces. Jake Hanes scored 21 points for the United States, while Matthew Anderson contributed 20.
