Greece's Karalis climbs to career-best fifth in World Athletics Rankings
Emmanouil Karalis's outstanding performances over the past month have lifted him to his highest-ever position in the World Athletics rankings across all events.
The latest rankings are particularly representative, having been released after the outdoor track and field season has effectively come to an end, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.
Karalis, known as Manolo, climbed from seventh to fifth place over the past two weeks, with an average of 1,475 points based on his five best results over the past year. The Greek champion's achievement is all the more significant because he accumulated his points with four second-place finishes and just one victory, at this year's Diamond League Final. Nevertheless, he ranks above athletes who have won major competitions and set world records.
The five results contributing the most points to his ranking are his 6.15m clearance at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship (1,538 points), his 6.00m at last year's World Championships in Tokyo (1,497), his 6.12m in Brussels (1,470), his 6.20m in Zurich (1,442) and his 6.16m in Lausanne (1,431).
The only athletes ahead of Karalis are Mondo Duplantis (1,561 points), Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos (1,526), American sprinter Kenneth Bednarek, who benefited from two victories at the Ultimate Championship (1,494), and Botswana's 400m runner Busang Collen Kebinatshipi (1,483).
Miltiadis Tentoglou also occupies a high position, 22nd, with 1,402 points, up seven places from a fortnight ago. His ranking would have been higher had he finished further up the standings at last year's World Championships, where he placed 11th.His five results counting towards the rankings are his victories at the Ultimate Championship with a jump of 8.35m (1,474 points), in Monaco with 8.61m (1,441), in Xiamen and Zurich with identical jumps of 8.46m, earning him 1,378 and 1,376 points respectively, and his second-place finish at the Diamond League Final in Brussels with 8.40m (1,375).
