Croatian Swimmer wins 100m freestyle gold at Youth Olympics
Croatian swimmer Ana Bobanović won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
The 17-year-old from Rijeka achieved the impressive result just two days after carrying her country's flag at the opening ceremony, CE Report quotes HINA.
Bobanović had already signalled her medal ambitions by recording the fastest time in the morning heats. In the final, she was third after the first 50 metres but increased her pace in the second half of the race and secured victory with an excellent finish in a time of 55.89 seconds.
New Zealand's Alyssa Lawson won silver in 56.13 seconds, while India's Dhinidhi Desingh took bronze, finishing in 56.27 seconds.
The member of Swimming Club Primorje, who is coached by former Olympian Krešimir Čač, claimed gold in her very first event at the Games. More than 60 swimmers from around the world competed in the discipline.
This is Croatia's third swimming gold medal in the history of the Youth Olympic Games. Ivan Capan previously won the 50m breaststroke in Singapore in 2010, followed by Nikola Obrovac in Nanjing in 2014.
Croatia has now won its second medal in Dakar, following the silver medal claimed by judoka Jona Žvorc on the opening day of competition.
