The “Astrit Bytyçi” Sports Hall in Ferizaj was transformed into a hub for veteran athletes, hosting the Kosovo Veterans Table Tennis Championship.

The event, which began in the morning hours, brought together former athletes and enthusiasts of the sport from across Kosovo. Participants are divided into five age categories, ranging from 40 to over 80 years old, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Speaking about the progress and importance of the event, Sheremet Hoti, a representative of the Kosovo Table Tennis Federation, said:

“I feel good and proud that we have organized this championship, which we hold every year. This competition has been running for many years and has now become a tradition, because the veterans of this sport represent the past, the history of this federation, and the inspiration for new generations. Today it is very important, as we have age groups from 40 to 86 years old.”

Well-known names who have dedicated their lives to the sport also took part in the championship.

Faik Çitaku, 84 years old, a retired physical education professor, coach, and international table tennis referee, explained how sport has kept him active for over five decades:

“I have been involved in table tennis and other sports for more than 50 years. As a sports teacher, I taught children and students swimming and skiing, while handball was my number one sport and table tennis number two. As a competitor, teacher, I am also a coach and international table tennis referee. Now I am retired, but I am happy to be in this profession, and it is helping my health. Here, I still compete with players younger than me.”

Regarding youth interest and conditions, he added:

“There is interest, but we older generations, the Federation, and the Olympic Committee should influence schools more, as they are the foundation of learning, art, and sport. Schools should have more than one table tennis table. In the past, there were no proper conditions, but now conditions are better. I believe this sport should grow even more, especially with the Mediterranean Games that will be held in Kosovo, which will be a strong incentive and lead to even better facilities.”

On the health and organizational importance of the championship, Dr. Sadri Hulaj, an emergency doctor and head of the Veterans Association of the Table Tennis Federation, said:

“I am an emergency doctor and have played for many years. In recent years, we have been categorized into age groups, making it easier for players so that stronger players don’t compete against weaker ones and discourage them. On the contrary, we meet after several months and enjoy a very pleasant atmosphere. As a doctor, I see that we are all healthy, and this activity helps prevent diseases. This is currently the second tournament organized by the Veterans Association, and we hold several others during the year, while also participating in competitions in Albania and Montenegro.”

Regarding medical recommendations, he added:

“Engaging in sports is the best prevention against diseases, and table tennis is especially beneficial. It has many advantages and very few injuries. As a doctor, I rarely encounter injuries from table tennis compared to other sports. This sport is suitable for everyone.”
