Moldovan government approves changes to sports funding rules
The government today approved a series of amendments to the financial regulations governing sports activities.
The changes are aimed at creating a clearer and more efficient mechanism for supporting sporting performance, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
One of the most important changes is the possibility of including up to three days of acclimatization before official international competitions among eligible expenses. The measure applies when travel involves crossing at least three time zones and/or competing in climatic conditions significantly different from those at the athletes’ usual training location. During the acclimatization period, transportation, accommodation and daily food allowances may be covered.
The amendments also regulate the possibility of hiring auxiliary personnel involved occasionally in the organization and running of competitions. These individuals may be paid up to 300 lei per day for the period required to prepare for and carry out sports activities or competitions.
The draft also stipulates that results achieved in non-Olympic events, as well as awards for coaches of athletes competing in those disciplines, will be excluded from the prize scheme financed from the state budget.
According to the explanatory note accompanying the draft, non-Olympic sports disciplines do not have official recognition from the International Olympic Committee, have a lower level of competitiveness, and the international federations governing these sports are not subject to verification criteria and requirements as strict as those applied to Olympic sports.
“With these amendments, we are taking an important step toward a clearer, fairer and more performance-oriented sports funding system. We want public resources to be directed where they can generate the best results for sport in the Republic of Moldova, supporting the athletes and coaches who represent us in international competitions,” said Galina Rusu, Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Research.
The new provisions will enter into force one month after the government decision is published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova.
