Slovenia's Jan Oblak becomes world’s highest-paid goalkeeper
Slovenia international and long-time Atletico Madrid player Jan Oblak has become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world, according to the Livescore sports news portal.
The Slovenian has moved to the top of the rankings after the previous top earner, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer agreed to take a paycut as part of his new contract, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.
Oblak earns around £342,127 per week, equivalent to just under €400,000, according to Livescore.
The 33-year-old Slovenian has two years remaining on his contract with Atletico Madrid, where he has been a key player for more than a decade.
"In his prime, few would deny Oblak is worth it. The Slovenian has been brilliant for Atletico for over a decade and will go down as a modern-day legend of La Liga goalkeepers," Livescore wrote about the Škofja Loka-born goalkeeper.
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is second on the top 10 list, with his total weekly salary topping £270,000 (€314,344). However, his current club, Ajax, are only paying about 10% of that.
The rest of his wages during his loan spell in Amsterdam is subsidised by his parent club Barcelona.
Gianluigi Donnarumma ranks third among the world's best-paid goalkeepers, earning £265,000 (€308,522) per week.
Donnarumma, the best-paid goalkeeper in the English Premier League, has proved a major addition for Manchester City since joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
He played 43 times in his first season with City, who are paying him more than he previously earned at either AC Milan or in Paris.
