American skiing legend Mikaela Shiffrin will head to the Milan–Cortina Olympic Games as the women’s World Cup slalom champion after winning a record ninth crystal globe on Sunday in Czechia.

Shiffrin is the first skier, male or female, to win nine World Cup titles in a single discipline. American Lindsey Vonn won eight downhill titles, while Austria’s Marcel Hirscher won eight overall globes, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Shiffrin was 1.26 seconds faster than Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener after the first run and was also the fastest in the second run by a commanding margin of 1.67 seconds.

She now holds a commanding total of 780 points, with world champion Rast 288 points behind her and two slalom races remaining after the Olympic Games.

Shiffrin went to the last Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022 as a medal contender in six disciplines, but crashed in three of them and failed to reach the podium in the others.

The women’s Olympic slalom in Cortina d’Ampezzo is scheduled for February 18.
