Luis Enrique, the coach of Paris Saint-Germain, explained that “fighting until the last second” is part of his team’s “DNA” after PSG won the French Super Cup, defeating rivals Olympique Marseille 4–1 on penalties in Kuwait City, following a 2–2 draw (1–0) at the end of regular time, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

“We started well, we scored. Then OM were very good, maybe better than us. Perhaps they deserved more, but that’s football,” Luis Enrique said at the press conference.

“We fought until the last second. It’s a kind of DNA of this team,” added Enrique, before talking about penalty shootouts, a specialty in which PSG excel.

“Some say it’s about luck. Maybe there is a bit of luck. But today (Thursday, ed.), all goalkeepers and the staff work on opponents’ shots. We have very good attackers and top goalkeepers. It’s the right combination,” said the Spanish coach.

“The fact that we reached penalties after the late equalizer gave us special motivation,” Luis Enrique explained.

“It was an open, intense match. It was very hard for us to press, they defended well, they showed they are a good team with a very good coach,” concluded the PSG manager.

PSG, the reigning champions, opened the scoring through Ousmane Dembélé (13th minute), but OM turned the match around late on thanks to a goal by Mason Greenwood (76th minute, penalty) and an own goal by Willian Pacho (87th). The Parisians equalized at the very last moment through Gonçalo Ramos (90+5).

In the penalty shootout, Luis Enrique’s team converted all their kicks through Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes and Désiré Doué, while for OM only Michael Murillo scored. The shots taken by Matt O’Riley and Hamed Junior Traorè were saved by goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who was the hero of the match with many outstanding interventions during regular time as well.

As reported by CE Report, PSG won their first trophy of the year and their 14th French Super Cup (a record), the last four consecutively. Olympique Marseille remain with two Champions’ Trophies in their history.
